Reinhold Domann was born on September 15, 1902, in Ströbitz. Reinhold was a roofer by trade. In 1935, he was imprisoned in Lichtenberg Concentration Camp for being gay, a sentence that marked the beginning of years of suffering. Over time, he was transferred to at least three other camps: Sachsenhausen, Flossenbürg, and finally, Dachau.
While at Flossenbürg, Reinhold’s defiant spirit caught the attention of the camp commander, who wrote about him with frustration. He bravely resisted the forced labor imposed on gay prisoners and even inspired others in his block to do the same. In response, the commander noted, "he must be punished again and again." Though the full extent of the horrors Reinhold endured is unknown, it is likely that his defiance played a role in his transfer to Dachau.
In 1941, he was forcibly castrated at Dachau, a cruel and inhumane punishment inflicted upon many gay prisoners. Records indicate that he was released on September 11, 1942, but nothing else is known about his fate.
